Green Sand
Always available.
One of the few dishes I never put away.
Ancient marine sediment, rich in silica, calcium, fossilized sea life, and trace minerals. An everyday staple that supports molting and strong exoskeletons.
One ingredient. Nothing else.
What Is Green Sand for Hermit Crabs?
Green sand is a mineral-rich marine sediment that gives hermit crabs access to trace minerals they may seek out as they need them. These minerals play a role in growth, molting, and maintaining a strong exoskeleton.
Keep a small dish of green sand available in the crabitat at all times. Your hermit crabs can visit it whenever they need it — there's no need to mix it into their food or measure out a daily serving.
Green sand is one of three foods we call The Core, along with worm castings and calcium. These are kept available all the time instead of being rotated with the rest of the daily buffet.
The Buffet Method
In the wild, hermit crabs eat something different every day.
Build a small daily buffet with Complete Meals and Single Ingredients. Keep The Core — green sand, worm castings, and calcium — available separately at all times.
Rotate the foods in their daily buffet for variety.
Let your crabs choose.
Nature never serves the same plate twice.
